A cropped, blurred or strongly processed photo may support a genus-level or family-level identification without supporting species. “Probable” and “unresolved” are useful outcomes.
Automated suggestions are candidates, not conclusions. Compare them with a regional key and look for a conflict in range, habitat or diagnostic anatomy.
Escalate only when needed
For protected, unusual or range-expanding observations, preserve the original file and its metadata. Contact a local fisheries agency, museum or qualified taxonomic resource rather than crowdsourcing certainty.
Do not collect, transport or disturb an animal simply to resolve a photograph unless legal authority and a valid scientific protocol require it.
